Mesmerising moment majestic humpbacks show off their acrobatic moves

These majestic humpback whales have been snapped showing off their breathtaking acrobatic moves just beneath the water’s surface.

Talented underwater photographer David Edgar captured these stunning photographs and a mesmerising video while freediving off the coast of Tonga.

The 31-year-old has been Freediving Mask – which involves diving beneath the water’s surface on a single breath, without any scuba equipment – for the past seven years.

David, Freediving Watch from Sydney, Australia, managed to capture these incredible images while on a free dive and added that this group of whales were relaxed and curious around him.

He also recorded the magical moment a playful whale began dancing, twisting and turning right in front of him.

He said: ‘These images were taken a few miles off the coast of Tonga, a small group of islands in the South Pacific.

‘The nearest island was Tongatapu, which is the main island in the Kingdom of Tonga.

‘I went out on a small boat with my wife, Alice, in search of whales.

‘We are both free divers who have been swimming with whales for the past seven years in Tonga.

‘These were two whales hanging around on this particular occasion, one was sleeping near the sea floor and one was frolicking near the surface.

‘Typically the younger whales are most curious of people in the water, whilst the older whales are happy to sleep on the sea floor whilst their calves play with people.

‘They were very relaxed and curious about us.

It was an incredible experience.’

David added: 'I really like how these photos and video capture the unique personality of whales. These ones were particularly playful and seemed to enjoy frolicking around the surface'

‘Some whales don’t hang around and just swim off when we are in the water.

‘Other are really curious and try to figure out what exactly we are doing.

‘It’s already a great feeling to be able to share my passion for whales and the underwater world with others online.’

Incredible moment a pair swim with up to 40 curious hammerhead sharks

A pair of lucky beachgoers have been filmed snorkelling with a school of up to 40 hammerhead sharks off the West Australian coast.

Video producer filmed the remarkable drone footage of Friday morning in the ocean off Rockingham, south of Perth.

His two friends Freediving Fins instructor and travel agent were the lucky pair of snorkelers who also filmed the encounter from the water.

‘To my knowledge this hasn’t been done before so we planned carefully around wind and weather,’ Mr Slawinski told Daily Mail Australia.

‘Looking at the forecast it was perfect for Friday so we planned it for about three days and Freediving Watch the forecast was 100 per cent spot on. Zero wind and good visibility,’ he said.

Mr Slawinski, who also runs courses training people how to pilot drones, said that he spent about 20 minutes looking for a school of sharks.

‘Once the drone located a school of about 40 hammerheads, the girls had to swim over half a kilometre to get to them.’

‘They approached cautiously using the drone as guidance and from that point they had 30 minutes with the sharks, who weren’t bothered by their presence at all. They didn’t seem phased, didn’t scatter and seemed to swim normally, even underneath the snorkelers.’

In the footage the two women can be seen floating about a large group of the sharks who appear to be calm in the presence of the unusual visitors.

One of the lucky snorkelers, Jess McGilvray, said that swimming with hammerheads is something that she has always wanted to do.

‘Swimming with hammerheads is something I’ve wanted to do for some time. Other places in the world you can do it but you need a dive ticket and it’s really expensive. I spent my childhood in Rockingham so it was amazing to do it there,’ she told The West Australian.

‘We had the drone so I felt safe. Groups of snorkellers had scared them away previously. They can be timid and skittish so you just go slow on the top of the water and go gently. I was just so excited and happy. So many emotions. We can’t stop smiling the whole day,’ she said.

World's youngest freediver aged just THREE plunges 32ft into the sea

This astonishing footage shows the world’s youngest freediver plunging 32 feet under the sea aged just three.

Fedor Afonasiev has been diving without aged oxygen since he was a two-year-old, following in the footsteps of his adventurous parents.

He was filmed pulling himself down a pole into the Blue Hole, a submarine sinkhole in the Red Sea, before resurfacing when he could not hold his breath any longer.

Fedor, whose parents are instructors, is also seen riding on his mother’s back in video taken by professional freediver Alexey Molchanov, 29, from Moscow.

‘This project of shooting with Fedor appeared natural when I saw him in the water,’ said Alexey.

‘I see a kid who see what his parents do and naturally follows their passion.’

Alexey used a GoPro camera to capture the video footage.

As an experienced freediver Alexey can hold his breath for eight minutes and thirty-three seconds.

He holds a world record depth of 423 feet while depth diving with fins.

‘There is no competitive approach for kids,’ he said.

‘We do not push Fedor to do any numbers.

He does whatever he feels comfortable with. That is very important to note for any kid’s breath hold activity.

‘We think it is important for freediving to be a fun activity for kids.

‘When people see it, they cannot believe how good is Fedor underwater and that actually motivates them to start learning Freediving Suit as well.’

The Blue Hole, which is just north of Dahab in Egypt, is popular with divers all year round.

'World's greatest freediver' is feared to have drowned off Ibiza

A Russian woman described as the ‘world’s greatest freediver’ is feared to have drowned after she vanished while diving off the coast of Ibiza.

Natalia Molchanova, 53, was swimming at a depth of about 114 feet in the Balearic Sea on Sunday when she failed to return to the surface.

In a desperate effort to locate his mother, Ms Molchanova’s son Alexey has employed a search and rescue company to use underwater robots that can scan a 500 mile wide area at depth.

But with the hunt already four days in, Mr Molchanova appears to have accepted it is unlikely his mother will be found, telling journalists: ‘It seems she’ll stay in the sea… I think she would like that.’

Ms Molchanova went diving without fins in calm weather on Sunday afternoon, intending to reach a explore at around 114 feet – a moderate depth she was very much used to reaching.

A holder of 41 separate diving records and the 23-time freediving world champion, Ms Molchanova’s record for a dive without fins is a staggering 232 feet.

But after sinking beneath the water this time, the diving veteran simply failed to resurface, sparking a frantic search operation involving the local Coast Guard, several private boats and helicopters.

Tragically, four days later, that search is now being scaled back as many in the freediving community admit that it is likely Ms Molchanova drowned.

‘The world has lost its greatest free diver,’ Will Trubridge – a freediver who has broken 15 world records – told the . ‘I don’t think anybody would dispute that,’ he added.

Ms Molchanova started her career as a competitive swimmer in her native Russia before leaving the sport to raise a family.

She started freediving 20 years later, showing a natural aptitude for a sport that is based around how long a person can hold their breath underwater while performing various tasks.

The phrase freediving actually means the swimmer is ‘free’ of aids such as breathing apparatus or fins – taking to the water in just a simple, lightweight swimsuit.

In one of her final interviews, conducted last year, Ms Molchanova said: ‘Free diving is not only sport, it’s a way to understand who we are.’

‘When we go down, if we don’t think, we understand we are whole. We are one with world. When we think, we are separate. On surface, Freediving Suit it is natural to think and we have many information inside. We need to reset sometimes. Free diving helps do that,’ she added.
